Is My Yard Full Sun or Part Shade?
Maybe the amount of sun seems obvious and if there is sun the entire day or shade the entire day it may be. Clients often tell me what they think about the amount of sun but if they really track it the amount of sun or shade may be different than what they originally thought.
To determine whether a spot is full sun or part shade
– How much sun does the area get and what times of the day? Check sections of your yard and various times throughout the day. You may have just been noticing in the morning when it was sunny. What if by afternoon that spot is in the shade.
In general: If the area is getting 8 hours or more of sun or is sunny from noon until sundown – full sun.
If the spot is receiving less than 8 hours or only morning sun – part shade.
If the sun never hits that spot – shade.
Although plants may survive in less than ideal situations plants will be easier to care for and have fewer pest and disease problems if they are planted in areas with conditions they prefer.
