Survey your property – shade, sun, part shade. Notice what parts of your yard receive sun and shade and what times of day (morning, afternoon, or all day). If a plant label says “Sun” then it should receive sun for at least 8 hours per day. Afternoon sun is most important in that case. If the plant is labelled “Shade” be sure to plant it in a shady area – filtered sunlight or less. Part sun would refer to less than 8 hours of direct sunlight. Morning sun is less harsh and so a part sun plant may be able to tolerate longer periods of morning sun.
Edibles for sun – most that produce fruit – tomatoes, melons, squash, peaches, apples
Edibles for part shade/part sun – most leafy edibles – lettuce, spinach, cilantro. Also peas
